Byron Bay

This Insta-famous destination is one of Australia’s most talked-about (and visited) beachside towns, and rightfully so.

Byron Bay is bursting at the seams with eateries, shopfronts, markets and festivals that promote the easy-going boho lifestyle that this region is renowned for.

Byron’s lush subtropical climate is an outdoor lover’s dream. The hinterland’s rolling hills and rainforests are just begging to be explored, and the dramatic coastline is a prime spot for surfing, diving and whale-watching. Coastal walks are in abundance, some will take you up to the iconic Byron Bay Lighthouse and others through national parkland that gives way to some of the best surf breaks you’ll find in Australia.

From sun-up, Byron is pulsing with an eclectic mix of on-trend cafés and eateries championing paddock-to-plate ethos, late-night bars and an array of boutiques that are overflowing with lustful homewares and fashion.

Plus, there’s the weekly farmers’ market which brings in the region’s freshest farmgate produce.

Without missing a beat, Byron’s music and arts scene is thriving. The annual events calendar is filled with an array of sell-out festivals, and even on the streets you’ll get your music fix, with roaming buskers and street performers aplenty. Art galleries shine a spotlight on local and international talent, and monthly community markets are a platform for local artisans.

Being the popular travel destination that it is, adventure sports have etched their way in, in a big way – from mountain biking to sea kayaking to skydiving – and surf schools are in abundance. And although the many holiday homes and boutique guesthouses are a growing presence, they do little to detract from the easy-breezy lifestyle that Byron is renowned for.
